What should I look for in a display?

  • Size:

Gamers generally prefer an FHD display with a high refresh rate. We’ll get to the concept of refresh rate in just a bit, but an FHD display is less taxing on the GPU as it needs to draw only 2.07 million pixels compared to say 8 million pixels required to produce a 4K image.

These days, with the availability of powerful GPUs for laptops such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 or RTX 2080, it is very much possible to drive even 4K displays at high refresh rates without having to worry about artifacts or screen tearing issues. Thus, even competitive gamers can now reap the benefits of fast high-resolution screens.

  • Refresh rate:

Refresh rates have a direct impact on the overall viewing experience. Basically, refresh rate denotes the number of times an LCD panel can refresh its image data. A display with a refresh rate of 60 Hz can refresh its on-screen content 60 times a second.

Most laptops you’ll see will have 1080p resolution and a 60Hz display. And for many gamers, that’s absolutely enough. Higher resolution displays (2560 x 1440, 3840 x 2160) are pretty, but top out at 60Hz. That’s why for some gamers, 1080p may be the best option.

Some vendors offer FHD displays with a faster, 144 Hz, 240 Hz, or even 360 Hz refresh rate for smoother gaming. Of course, you need a great GPU and to play on settings that emphasize frame rate over graphical fidelity to take advantage.

In addition to the benefits associated with a higher refresh rate, a 1440p 144Hz monitor nets you a higher resolution for sharper image quality.

You’ll notice the advantages of 1440p right away, whether in-game or out. The windows, icons, and taskbars all scale providing more usable screen real estate, which is great for productivity. But the ability to fit more information on-screen isn’t limited to the desktop; this space-saving effect carries over into games with scalable user interfaces.

For example, in World of Warcraft*, the user interface will take up less of the screen at a higher resolution. That means you’ll be able to see more of the world of Azeroth*, and less of the UI obscuring your view while out on a raid.

  • Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync:

Some gaming notebooks, particularly on the high-end, support technologies that sync the display with the graphics cards, which eliminates screen tearing and ghosting.

  • Avoid touch screens:

While not inherently bad, touch screens are unnecessary on gaming notebooks (some 2-in-1 models notwithstanding). They kill battery life and can make the display overly glossy.

Screen Type

The screen size and resolution are the primary features that manufacturers mention. Still, the screen type also makes a difference in performance. The screen type refers to the LCD panel and the coating over the screen.


There are two basic technologies used in LCD panels for laptops: TN and IPS. TN panels are the most common, as these are the least expensive and tend to offer faster refresh rates. TN panels have some disadvantages, including narrow viewing angles and colors. TN panels offer less overall color, but this typically only matters for graphics designers.

When current is applied, the TN liquid crystal molecules bend or “twist” the light coming from the first polarizer by 90 degrees so that it can now pass through the second polarizer. Before getting through to the second polarizer, the light passes through color filters for red, blue, and green.

This simple arrangement allows TN panels to offer very low response times. TN panels still constitute the majority of laptop displays as they can be configured to offer response times as low as 1 ms (gray-to-gray) and true 120+ Hz displays on a restricted budget making them an ideal choice for gaming displays.

However, TN panels have narrow viewing angles and can only use 6 bits per RGB color, requiring the use of workarounds such as dithering to produce 16.7 million colors.

IPS displays are similar to TN displays for the most part except for the orientation of the liquid crystals. Unlike in TN panels, there is no helical twisting of crystals involved. Rather, the IPS liquid crystal molecules rotate by 90 degrees “in-plane”, i.e. horizontally, to allow light to pass through and they are aligned to the display plane at all times.

IPS offers higher color and viewing angles. However, these screens tend to cost more, have slower refresh rates, and are not as suited for gaming or fast video.

  • OLED

OLED is another technology showing up in some laptops. It has been used for high-end mobile devices such as smartphones for some time. The primary difference between OLED and LCD technologies is that OLED doesn’t require a backlight. Instead, pixels generate light from the display, which gives these screens better overall contrast ratios and color.
